Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, owned by Government of India, is a power plantequipment manufacturer and operates as an engineering and manufacturing company based in New Delhi, India. Established in 1964, BHEL is India's largest engineering and manufacturing company of its kind. The company has been earning profits continuously since 1971-72 and paying dividends uninterruptedly since 1976-77.
BHEL was established in 1964. Heavy Electricals Limited was merged with BHEL in 1974.In 1982, it entered into power equipments, to reduce its dependence on the power sector. It developed the capability to produce a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical equipments for all sectors, including transmission, transportation, oil and gas and other allied industries.In 1991, it was converted into a public limited company. By the end of 1996, the company had handed over 100 Electric Locomotives to Indian Railway and installed 250 Hydro-sets across India.
BHEL has retained its market leadership position during 2013-14 with 72% market share in the Power Sector. An improved focus on project execution enabled BHEL record its highest ever commissioning/synchronization of 13,452 MW of power plants in domestic andinternational markets in 2013-14, marking a 30% increase over 2012-13. The company has added more than 1,24,000 MW to the country's installed power generating capacity so far.
BHEL has established four specialized institutes, viz., Welding Research Institute at Tiruchirappalli, Ceramic Technological Institute at Bangalore, Centre for Electric Traction at Bhopal and Pollution Control Research Institute at Haridwar. Amorphous Silicon Solar Cell plant at Gurgaon pursues R&D in Photo Voltaic applications.
